DOT Trainings and DOT-qualified SAP Evaluation Services
DOT Training
Since 1991, the U.S. Department of Transportation (DOT) has prioritized making sure that “safety-sensitive” transportation employees aren’t operating under the influence of alcohol and other substances. These safety-sensitive workers include those in aviation and trucking, as well as school bus drivers, railroad operators, mass transit workers, and others.
As a rule, DOT regulations cover all safety-sensitive transportation employers and employees. Although these regulations are both strict and industry-specific, there are still certain grey areas.
Are you unsure whether or not you or your organization are subject to DOT testing? The DOT’s “Am I Covered?” online tool can help you quickly determine whether or not DOT drug testing regulations apply to you, your organization, and its employees. If you’d prefer, you can contact us now and we’ll help you determine what you need to do to comply with DOT regulations.
CARE also has on-staff Substance Abuse Professionals (SAPs) available to conduct SAP evaluations for safety-sensitive employees who have failed a DOT drug test, regardless of whether or not your organization has a current CARE EAP contract.
Do you have reason to suspect an employee is misusing substances? Contact us, and we’ll help you determine how to proceed.
What are Department of Transportation Trainings?
CARE of Southeastern Michigan provides a full range of industry-specific Department of Transportation (DOT) trainings. These include both the education sessions required for every safety-sensitive employee, as well as the comprehensive trainings specific to supervisors.
- Safety Sensitive Employees Training covers current Federal regulations and the impact of alcohol and drug use on job performance and safety. It also explores the role of Substance Abuse Professionals (SAPs), how they evaluate employees, and how they can help workers in need of assistance. (1 hour)
- Supervisors of Safety Employees Training includes the “Safety Sensitive Employees Training,” with additional modules on current Federal regulations, “reasonable suspicion” and identifying possible substance-use infractions, documenting incidents, and constructive practices for addressing issues in the workplace. (2 hours total)
Trainings are offered quarterly and can be held either at CARE’s offices or on site. These trainings are available to any company—regardless of whether or not they have a current EAP contract with CARE and can be flexibly scheduled. Every DOT training attendee receives a DOT manual they can use as a reference for future questions and situations.
In contrast to other organizations, CARE does not subcontract any of their DOT training. All our courses are taught by trained instructors who are deeply familiar with DOT regulations, as well as substance abuse, addiction, and recovery treatment. We also maintain our own team of trained, DOT-qualified SAPs (as per §40.281).
