"I Thought of You Today"
A poem by Nancy King who participated in CARE's Beyond Trauma, a class for women who have had life threatening experiences. She was incarcerated 21 years for a crime for which she was later found innocent.

I thought of you today--
You, whose bonny-blue eyes
Pierced through my existence
Making me whole
Changing my life forever.
You, who hung on my every word
And my leg as I left for work,
Crying, imploring me to stay
With cloudy blue eyes
 Now wet like the sea.

I thought of you today
As I searched my footlocker--
(The place I hide you)
For some unimportant thing,
Happening upon your photograph.
You, whose familiar blue eyes
Still possess the power to pierce
Through my existence
--even from a photograph
--even fifteen years later.

I thought of you today--
Not as the child I remember,
Whose mellifluous voice was like whispers
On a silky breath of wind,
And whose smile lit my life
Like a warm and cheerful sunrise,
But of you, the reticent, silent man
I do not know,
Yet whose secrets
I know all too well.

I thought of you today--
of the tormenting memories
Of a bleak and broken past
Which burdens my heart,
Slowly consuming me
piece-by-broken-piece.
You, whose doleful blue eyes--
Eyes I once wiped tears from--
Now stare blankly at me
From the place I hide you.
